Reflection #1
In this first week of symposium, we were asked to start researching our topic for our project. Our topic for symposium is about music and the universal theme with it is adaptation. We have been working on finding a twist for our project but in some ways it’s difficult to find one or to try and think of one because of music being such a big idea. One “twist” I guess that we came up with was about what would happen if there was only one type of music and it actually never changed. In the next few steps on continuing with symposium I hope that we find good articles that explain to us in detail about how music has changed over time and how it influences on people based on that. We haven’t changed anything about our project but I think we might because we want to make our project about something no one has done before to make it unique. So far, in our exploration of the topic, I have learned that every single year music always changes in some sort of way. Our collaboration so far isn’t going so good because we still need to communicate even more with one of our teammates. We are working on working together more and more often and hopefully we end up working a lot together in order for us to get things done. We have created chats to chat with each other about symposium. Something that is working out good is that we have at least talked about our topic and thought about what we were going to do. We have also been looking up resourceful articles about our topic that all of us have seen.

Reflection #2
Since the last time I wrote about my research, I found out a lot about our topic. We had to change our driving question and topic around a bit because we focused more on how African Americans have influenced music that we now know of here in America. We are doing an interview for our student-led-research because we feel like with the help of an expert that knows a lot about our symposium topic we can have more information to go with everything that we are going to put up on our poster board. Something that has been easy is finding articles because that is something I’m very good at. In contrast, something that has been difficult was coming up with our driving question because it is hard for me to think up good questions. In our next steps, we need to meet up as much as we can to not fall behind and miss out on the due dates. Our collaboration is getting a lot better and I feel like we are working well enough till this day now because we understand what things we need to do.

Since the last time I wrote about my symposium research, I learned a lot more thanks to reading articles that we found and annotated. I learned that the more focused and dedicated you are towards getting something done, the better you do because you work faster and more efficiently. Our group made our trifold background as it were staff paper and we drew in music notes that represent a rock ‘n’ roll song by the Rolling Stones. We also made rock ‘n’ roll guitars and glued them together along with our driving question attached to one of them. We still aren’t sure what we want our artistic or supplemental piece to be yet but we are working on it. In our next steps, we need to make sure we all meet up after school as much as possible to get things done just like the artistic or supplemental piece that goes with our symposium project. Our collaboration is going good but it isn’t going as great or bad. We need to make sure we do our work and that everyone does something or is working on something so we won’t be behind. Something that we are working well on is getting things done on time.

Reflection #4
Our Symposium driving question was how have cultural adaptations between White and Black Americans contributed with Rock ‘n’ Roll? Some revisions that we made as we prepared to turn our project was to make sure everything we did related to our topic somehow and we also made sure that all of our papers that we glued onto our trifold were glued down all the way instead of little pieces of edges not being glued down. Something that I learned about our topic that I didn’t know before is how there were artists before Elvis Presley that played Rock ‘n’ Roll. I learned that scholarly research has to be done with also using context clues and even looking up the author to see if the article that we were using was credible or not. I learned that you need to study the things you learn and read because when you do an oral presentation, they will ask you questions that you are supposed to know. What I learned about the student led research is that you can see how many people think differently than others by asking questions. I think that I did good on our collaborative research because I did help out with what I could and I tried my best to collaborate towards the end of our project. If we could have done anything differently, I say we should’ve started on working faster way earlier and have gotten engaged with mentors too. We could’ve asked more questions too about if we were doing the right thing earlier. The advice that I would give to any incoming student next year for symposium is to become engaged and ask a lot of questions to their mentors if they have any doubts as well as starting with symposium as soon as it starts because being ahead is better than being behind.

Our Process pictures are displayed at the left. After hours of cutting, drawing, painting, we made progress through the days. Although it took us a while to get everything done but we are very proud of our work. We are currently still working on our creative piece although we are done with our trifold.
